Guided ReadingText and author:Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie, David Lubar
Reading Level of the text: Interest Level: Grade 9 – 12. Grade Level Equivalent: 3.9. Lexile: 560L. Guided Reading: Not Rated. Genre/Theme: Comedy & Humor, General Fiction. Topics: Character & Values, Friends & Friendships.
Teacher READ ALOUD: Tutor and student will take turns reading a chapter.
Learning Objective: ELA9RL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to contemporary context or historical background. The student
a. Relates a literary work to non-literary documents and/or other texts from its literary period.
ELA9RL1 The student demonstrates comprehension by identifying evidence (i.e., examples of diction, imagery, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, plot events and main ideas) in a variety of texts representative of different genres (i.e., poetry, prose [short story, novel, essay, editorial, biography], and drama) and using this evidence as the basis for interpretation.
Before Reading: What hook will you use to motivate the student to the text (virtual trip, drama, mystery bag, word theatre, culturally responsive discussion, writing, etc..?)
To limber up our minds, and practice word skills, Francesca will complete MIS-COMMUNICATION graphic organizer. Tutor will give her a clue to final novel project by letting her know she will need the skills she used to complete the graphic organizer.
We will be completing our reading of the novel during this lesson. Again, we’ll take turns reading a chapter, with our “high school music” playing in the background, and discuss each chapter. The motivation will be the anticipation of the final project assignment.
Select the NRP dimensions you will be focusing on for the lesson and list the specific reading strategies (For example: the analogy strategy for phonics and reciprocal questioning for comprehension):
Word Study/Phonics and Comprehension Strategy__
Word Study/Vocabulary and Comprehension Strategy: complete MIS-COMMUNICATION graphic organizer to practice word skills. It’s a fun word play, and will limber up our minds before we commence reading. This will also be a reminder to tutee to express herself with clarity as she works on her final project.
Fluency Strategy: Orally summarizing and retelling the chapter(s) read.
Comprehension Strategy: Reciprocal questioning and summarizing. Looking back to the novel to complete the sequence chart in preparation for final project.
What visuals, etc. will you use to reinforce the strategy before, during, and after reading/ (A chart, art, writing, etc.) Graphic organizers, Power Point templates for playable board game & pieces
During Reading:
Emphasis will be on recalling and retelling the plot and events, conflict(s) & resolution(s), which take place in the story. We’ll discuss and ask/answer questions as we read the final chapters, then discuss the book as a whole at its conclusion.
After Reading:
Tutor will bookmark Power Point board game template site, and site for game accessories template on Francesca’s computer. Assignment to Cessica: Create a board game of the book’s story, from its beginning as Scott starts high school to the story’s end (end of school year.) Make a game spinner and find articles that can serve as playing pieces. Print out your finished game on heavy card stock tutor has provided, and glue to cardboard game board provided by tutor. Play your “Freshman” game with your family and be prepared to answer any questions they have about the story details you have included in your game blocks.
To aid in recalling the important events in the story and to use as a reference when completing her game, Francesca will complete the Sequence Chart by looking back in the book.
Assessment of Objective: Francesca is enthusiastic about making a game on the computer. I have prepared a rubric for this assignment and gave her a copy of it, and she has taken it as a challenge to get the highest scores!
Reflections: I’m impressed by how well Francesca maintained her independent reading. I feel that keeping her motivated over the summer and “doing”, has eased her anxiety about “measuring up” in high school. Francesca has proudly placed Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie in her personal bookcase as a book read, and read willingly. Our final lesson will center on the non-fiction book we chose, and I plan to give Francesca instruction on skimming and note-taking (helpful for future reading of high school textbooks), as well as leave her with some useful resources.
